This is a base for mounting a Hamilton Beach 1917 Universal Motor for use with a Watchmaker Lathe. These motors come on a cast claw foot base with a spring pivot rod holding the motor under tension in contact with the driven appliance. Other brands, such as Westinghouse, sold the same design. These are frequently listed on eBay.

These motors were sold by Hamilton Beach for a wide variety of appliances. Sewing machines were at the top of the list, but fans, mixers, knife sharpeners... and possibly electric back scratchers (joking) were touted as uses for this motor back when electricity was just showing up in the home.

This mounting base allows proper adjustable use with a lathe. It requires removing the motor and pivot bar from the original cast base... and filing/milling a flat on the top of the pivot rod for proper indexing. The base has 1/4" holes for mounting on your bench or portable base.
